Reclaiming the Promise of Meet and Confer by PWFT President Bill Hosp
We got the message from our member survey at the end of the last school year. Most member concerns involve legislation or advocacy for individual members, but one concern that received significant support was that teachers felt that meetings were encroaching on planning time. This issue will be addressed but we are supposed to wait for administration’s response before we can report back to you. Our proposal will be submitted on September 25th.
Election Endorsements
AFT and the AFL-CIO have endorsed candidates for the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives in the November 4th general election for Congress. Sen. Mark Warner has been endorsed for re-election. Congressman Gerry Connolly was endorsed for re-election from the 11th District. Former Ambassador Don Beyer received the endorsement in the 8th District and Fairfax Supervisor John Foust got the endorsement in the 10th District. Also winning endorsements were Norm Mosher in the 1st District and Jack Trammell in the 7th District.
Sen. Warner’s Town Hall Meeting on Education October 9th
U. S. Senator Mark Warner will hold a town hall meeting to discuss education issues on Thursday, October 9th. The meeting was originally scheduled for September 30th. Please watch for an update on the time and place of the meeting. We ask that members save the date and attend.
The Thirty-Eighth Constitutional Convention of the Virginia AFL-CIO convened in Williamsburg, VA on August 14, 2014. Some of the guest speakers were Governor McAuliffe, Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam, Attorney General Mark Herring, the mayor of Williamsburg, Senator Mark Warner, and Congressman Bobby Scott. The Governor's address to the 200+ delegates ended with his signing of Executive Order #24, which establishes an Inter-Agency Task Force on Worker Misclassification and Payroll Fraud. This order will begin a process to ensure that employers throughout the Commonwealth follow the same rules when it comes to benefits and pay for their employees.
Member of the Month PWFT member Meredith Orgar accepted the role of lead ESOL teacher at Fitzgerald Elementary School last month. Congratulations, Meredith!
